Liz Puleo Crosses the Finish Line for the Y and the Community

On April 21, Liz Puleo achieved more than just a personal goal. She ran the 129th Boston Marathon with heart, purpose, and a powerful connection to the West Suburban YMCA’s mission. What began as a lifelong dream became a meaningful journey to honor a dear friend and raise critical funds for the Y’s Annual Fund.

Liz ran in memory of the late Fred Greene, a beloved YMCA board member and community leader who lived the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect. “Fred was an amazing father, husband, neighbor, and a tremendous friend to many in this community,” Liz shared. “Running the Boston Marathon will be the most physically challenging endeavor that I have undertaken yet. I am so grateful that I am in a place where I GET TO DO THIS, to not only honor my late friend Fred, but also to raise funds for the West Suburban YMCA.”

She did just that, exceeding her original fundraising goal of $7,500 and raising nearly $12,000 for the Y. These funds will directly support financial assistance programs, making it possible for more families to access the life-changing opportunities offered by the Y, including swim lessons, early education, childcare, and ACA-accredited summer camps (with Camp Wells actively pursuing accreditation).

As a mother of four, Liz has lived the Y experience from every angle: from early days in Kids Corner to her children’s adventures at summer camp and even her oldest landing his first job at the Y. “These experiences have made the Y a cornerstone of our family’s life,” she reflected.

We are incredibly proud of Liz, not only for completing the Boston Marathon but for running with deep intention and inspiring generosity across our community. Her dedication exemplifies the Y spirit: showing up for others, pushing past limits, and building a stronger, more inclusive community.

Thank you, Liz, for your miles, your mission, and your heart. You’ve crossed the finish line, and in doing so, you’ve lifted up so many others. 🧡
