Celebrating MLK by Spreading Joy Through Letters

WSYMCA members writing letters to seniors at the WSYMCA MLK Service Event
January 20, 2026

There’s nothing quite like the power of a simple note to brighten someone’s day. This MLK Day, the Wells Ave YMCA brought together families for an inspiring afternoon of giving through writing.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This MLK Day, members joined us in answering that question by spreading kindness and connection. Loneliness affects nearly 40% of adults aged 45 and older, according to the American Psychiatric Association, and can have serious impacts on health and well-being. Together, we can make a difference for seniors in our community who may feel isolated.

Kids, teens, and adults wrote and decorated heartfelt letters to local seniors, spreading kindness and community spirit. With colorful stationery, markers, stickers and templates provided, every letter became a personal message of hope and joy for seniors.

Those who couldn’t attend in person can still join in by dropping off letters throughout the week, all delivered to local nursing homes on January 23. So far, our community has created over 100 letters, proving that small act of kindness can make a big impact. The event celebrated Dr. King’s legacy while showcasing the WSYMCA’s commitment to social responsibility, youth development, and fostering meaningful connections.
