MLK Day of Service: Share Joy Through Letters

Date: Monday, January 19
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Location: Wells Ave Teen Center, 135 Wells Avenue, Newton

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This MLK Day, join us in answering that question by spreading kindness and connection. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 40% of adults aged 45 and older report feeling lonely, a key component of social isolation that can negatively impact physical, mental, and spiritual health. Together, we can make a difference for seniors in our community who may feel disconnected.

What’s Happening?

Stop by anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to write and decorate letters for seniors in local nursing homes and assisted living centers. A heartfelt message can brighten someone’s day and remind them they are not alone.

We’ll Provide Everything You Need:

  • Stationery, stickers, pens, markers, ribbon, and more
  • Letter templates for those who need inspiration

Can’t Attend in Person?

No problem! We’ll be collecting letters all week long. Drop them off at both Y branches and we’ll deliver them to local nursing homes on Friday, January 23.

Why Participate?

This simple act of kindness fosters connection and community spirit. Your words can bring joy and hope to someone who truly needs it.

“The rise in loneliness among midlife and older adults is a challenge we cannot ignore. Social connections are a lifeline; reaching out to a friend, engaging in community activities, or simply starting a conversation can make a meaningful difference. By fostering a more connected society, we can create a community where everyone feels seen, valued and supported.” — AARP
