Maria’s Y Story: Finding Strength, Support, and a Second Home
For Maria, the West Suburban YMCA has always been more than just a gym. It has been a lifeline. Her connection to the Y began through her brother-in-law, who has been a loyal member for more than 40 years. Encouraged by his experience, Maria decided to join and quickly discovered what made the Y so special.
“The staff is so wonderful,” Maria shared. “Everyone is so kind and helpful. It just feels good to be here.”
That feeling of connection became even more meaningful when life took an unexpected turn. Last year, Maria was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. The reality of treatment forced her to cancel her membership, but the lessons and confidence she gained at the Y remained part of her healing journey.
“Before I got sick, I took classes and learned how to lift weights. When I couldn’t come in anymore, I knew exactly what to do at home,” she said. “The treadmill was my favorite. Having that foundation helped me stay active and strong, even during treatment.”
Her doctors were amazed by her resilience. “They couldn’t believe how fit I was,” Maria said. “I told them it’s all thanks to the Y. It gave me the knowledge and motivation I needed to stay healthy.”
Now cancer-free, Maria is regaining her strength and looking to the future. She plans to join the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, a 12-week small-group fitness and support community designed specifically for cancer survivors.
“I didn’t even know you had the LIVESTRONG program, but I can’t wait to join,” she said. “I feel better than ever, and I know it will help me stay on this path.”
As a recipient of membership financial assistance, Maria is especially grateful for the support that made it all possible.
“If anyone’s thinking about joining, just do it,” she said. “The Y is a great resource. I even told my doctors to tell other patients about it. I hope more people realize how much it can help.”
Maria’s story is a reminder that when community, care, and access come together, powerful things happen. The West Suburban YMCA is honored to be part of her journey and will continue to be right beside her every step of the way.
