Finding Strength in the Water: How Financial Assistance Helps Members Keep Moving
At the West Suburban YMCA, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue a healthier life, regardless of their financial circumstances. For one 71-year-old member, Steve, financial assistance made it possible to continue doing something he loves while supporting his overall well-being.
Living on a fixed income supported only by Social Security, Steve found it challenging to afford a place where he could exercise in a way that worked best for his body. He has degenerative disc disease and arthritis, which make walking long distances difficult and running impossible. However, swimming provides the low-impact exercise he needs to stay active and strong.
Before joining the Y, Steve was a member of Planet Fitness because the affordable monthly cost fit within his budget. While he appreciated having a place to exercise, the facility did not offer something he needed most: access to a pool.
“I can swim, but finding an affordable aquatics venue was beyond my budget until I got assistance from WSYMCA,” he shared.
A Path to Wellness Through the Water
Through the West Suburban YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program, he was able to become a Y member and gain access to the pools at both our Church Street and Wells Avenue locations.
Now, Steve swims three to five times each week, making the Y an important part of his weekly routine.
“My overall fitness has improved a lot and I’m able to keep my orthopedic issues at bay,” he said.
For him, the pool is more than a place to exercise. It is a place where he can continue investing in his health, maintain his mobility, and do something positive for himself.
More Than a Membership
Financial assistance at the Y is about more than helping someone afford a membership. It is about removing barriers so people can access opportunities that strengthen their body, mind, and spirit.
Because of generous donors who support the West Suburban YMCA’s Annual Fund, members like Steve can continue to participate in programs and services that improve their quality of life.
“Thank you for all you do,” he shared. “And thank you for allowing me to afford membership.”
Every day, Y members walk through our doors with different goals, challenges, and stories. Thanks to our community of supporters, the Y remains a place where everyone has the opportunity to find strength, connection, and support.
